L’innovatore della fotografia di moda del XX secolo: Helmut Newton
Architettura neogotica veneziana ed una collezione di immagini fotografiche tra le più innovative ed ispiranti del XX secolo, il risultato è “Helmut Newton. Fotografie. White Women / Sleepless Nights / Big Nudes”. La location storica (casa/studio di, e disegnata da, Mario De Maria agli inizi del 1900) è oggi Casa dei Tre Oci, casa della fotografia dopo un attento e lungo restauro che ha preservato l’importanza dell’edificio dandogli nuova vita. La mostra in corso fino al 7 agosto 2016, è frutto di un progetto del 2011 nato per volontà di June Newton (vedova dell’indimenticabile fotografo), curata da Matthias Harder e Denis Curti, è stata organizzata da Civita Tre Venezie in collaborazione con la Helmut Newton Foundation. Più di 200 le opere esposte, provenienti dalle sue tre celebri pubblicazioni che danno il titolo alla mostra; un’esposizione che celebra il genio fotografico di Newton, colui che ha saputo rivoluzionare più di ogni altro la fotografia di moda miscelando ironia, seduzione e voyeurismo.

Esemplare la famosa “Self-portrait with Wife and models”, sullo sfondo il fotografo, accanto, ma su un piano diverso, la moglie che osserva l’oggetto dello scatto, e poi lei, la modella: questa più di tutte racchiude il genio di Helmut Newton e fa comprendere il reale ruolo del nudo nella scena. In White Women (1976) ha introdotto per la prima volta il nudo nella fotografia di moda, riconducendo la memoria alla Maja desnuda ed alla Maja vestita di Francisco Goya. In Sleepless Nights (1978) troviamo scene quasi da reportage, realizzate per magazine come Vogue. Con Big Nudes (1981) Newton entra nelle gallerie e nei musei di tutto il mondo, ufficialmente un’Artista dell’immagine fotografica.
With this exhibition, a project by the Fondazione di Venezia in partnership with Civita Tre Venezie, Casa dei Tre Oci confirms its position in the field of art and, above all, of photographic culture with its rooms exclusively devoted to photography. From 7 April to 7 August 2016, the exhibition Helmut Newton. Fotografie. White Women / Sleepless Nights / Big Nudes will present, for the first time in Venice, over 200 images by Helmut Newton, one of the most important and famous photographers of the twentieth century. The show, curated by Matthias Harder and Denis Curti, and organized by Civita Tre Venezie in collaboration with the Helmut Newton Foundation, is the outcome of a project inspired in 2011 by June Newton, the widow of the great photographer. The exhibition collects together images from White Women, Sleepless Nights, and Big Nudes, the first three books by Newton published at the end of the 1970s, books that are today considered legendary and which were the only ones to be edited by Newton himself. When selecting the photos, Newton interspersed a sequence, one next to another, of shots that had been commissioned with those he had made for himself, thus constructing a narrative which was a search for style, for the discovery of elegant gestures underpinned by the existence of a further reality, of something that it is up to the viewer to interpret.
